Which Processor for Dalvik and Android?
– The instruction set makes the difference.
Embedded systems with displays are adopting Android for a richer user experience. Android is based on a new interpreter, Dalvik, and highly responsive user interfaces require a high speed Dalvik interpreter. The Ubicom32 processors are the fastest available for interpreting Dalvik. This paper explains why, and includes detailed comparisons with ARM processors.
NASes for the Masses
– USB 3.0 enables mass-market networked storage solutions
Most common requirements in a home are router/Wi-Fi AP and fast connected storage. Currently, consumers address this need by using a combination modem + router/Wi-Fi AP from an ISP or buying a router/Wi-Fi AP; and by buying a NAS or a USB external HDD. To make the storage available on the network for multiple devices to back-up to the storage, or for multiple playback devices to read content from the storage, a NAS is the ideal solution. But NAS is complicated for a mainstream audience and is quite expensive. However, USB external HDDs are significantly more affordable and ubiquitous. Currently, USB 2.0 HDDs are slow and are not a viable option for many use cases such as data backup or HD video streaming. The availability of USB 3.0 now enables router/Wi-Fi APs to have a viable alternative to NAS solutions as the connected storage in the home – an alternative that is affordable, easy to use and fast.
